Hunter's Journey: Nightmare Hunting Review: Monster Hunting in a Cursed Forest

The trees are moving. Not swaying in the wind, moving: roots tearing out of the ground, branches reaching for anything that walks past. That is what young monster hunter Velimir walks into in Hunter's Journey: Nightmare Hunting, and it makes for one of the best spooky hidden object adventures of the year. Perfect timing for October.

What Hunter's Journey: Nightmare Hunting Is

Hunter's Journey: Nightmare Hunting is a hidden object adventure from Do Games. The Hunters' Academy sends Velimir and his loyal wolf into a forest being eaten away by a creeping rot, the work of an ancient spirit called the Blight. You follow the trail through a witch's hut, shrines carved from bone, glowing fungal caves and long-forgotten ritual grounds.

It plays like a classic adventure: you explore scenes, collect items to use elsewhere, search hidden object scenes and solve puzzles to open the way forward. Collectible charms are tucked around the forest and marked on your map, which gives completionists something extra to hunt.

What Players Love

The graphics come up first in almost every review, including from our own customers: the cursed forest is genuinely beautiful in a creepy way. Players also like that the hidden objects are clear and fair to find, that the hints are generous when you are stuck, and that the music sets a spooky mood without ever getting in the way. The story stands on its own, so you can start right here.

Play It Your Way

One of the nicest touches is how flexible the puzzles are. You can play each one on easy or hard, or skip it entirely if it is not your kind of challenge. One of our customers told us they skipped a few tricky mini-games and still loved the adventure, which is exactly the point: you set the difficulty, and nothing stops you from seeing the ending.

Where It Fits in the Series

Nightmare Hunting is the second Hunter's Journey game. The first, Hunter's Journey: Tears of the Lake, sends Velimir to a misty village where a girl has vanished and people whisper about mermaids beneath the water. You do not need to play it first, but if you enjoy Nightmare Hunting, it is the obvious next adventure.

Who Will Love It

Hunter's Journey: Nightmare Hunting is a great pick if you like your hidden object games atmospheric and a little spooky, enjoy a fantasy adventure with monsters to track down, or want a game you can tune to your own comfort level. It is a full adventure you can enjoy over a few evenings. If you prefer something cozier, try The Family Detective: Hidden Legacy.

The Verdict

A gorgeous cursed forest, a hunter and his wolf, and puzzles you can make as easy or as hard as you like: Hunter's Journey: Nightmare Hunting is an easy recommendation for a dark autumn evening. Try the free trial and follow Velimir into the woods.
